Maurice Cockrill (British, 1936–2013) is a second-generation Modern British artist of the Liverpool School. Born in Hartlepool, he attended the Wrexham School of Art in Wales, and, later, the Denbigh Technical College and University of Reading. After returning to Liverpool, he taught at the Liverpool College of Art and Liverpool Polytechnic. He rose to prominence in Liverpool’s artistic scene, regularly exhibiting at the Walker Art Gallery, and employing Pop Art and Photorealist styles. He relocated to London in the early 1980s, and gradually moved toward Romantic Expressionism. Cockrill taught at the Royal College of Art, the Slade and St. Martin’s School of Art. He was elected RA in 1999 and was Keeper at the RA Schools. Work is held in many private and public collections including the British Museum, Art Council of Great Britain, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and the Royal Academy of Arts.
